THE “AIDS ESTABLISHMENT”
Those who are part of the “AIDS establishment” adhere to the “official line” – that HIV causes AIDS. These are the people who receive all of the grant money, are on the boards of all of the AIDS fundraising organizations, and have their AIDS articles published in the establishment’s scientific journals. Newspapers and television networks report the establishment findings, rarely making judgments on the accuracy of information taken directly from press representatives at public health agencies. If a major newspaper or television network dares to question the “AIDS research establishment,” upper management and/or ownership almost always suppress it. On the few occasions when a newspaper prints a contradictory viewpoint, the article is usually buried on the back page of the Sports or Classified sections and public reaction is negligible.
THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FAILS TO PRODUCE A TREATMENT FOR AIDS
On 7 November 1991, Earvin “Magic” Johnson announced his retirement from professional basketball: “Because of the HIV virus that I have attained, I will have to retire from the Lakers.” Within minutes of his statement, fear over the escalation of heterosexual transmission increased dramatically: Forty-eight hours after Johnson’s announcement, the CDC reported 40,000 requests for AIDS testing; phones rang off the hook at AIDS clinics throughout the country; stocks in condom companies increased in value on the New York Stock Exchange. And the Sunday after Johnson’s retirement, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIAID, was interviewed on This Week with David Brinkley: We may not have a cure [by the end of this decade], but I am confident that with a combination of drugs, we will be able to prolong the disease-free state.”
By now most people had lost confidence in Fauci’s leadership. Since 1983, desperate AIDS victims had been circumventing FDA rules and importing foreign drugs. A huge medical underground of alternative medicine and unapproved drugs developed as a direct consequence of AIDS, and groups such as Act Up in New York City and Project Inform in San Francisco began exerting enormous pressure on the American medical establishment to overhaul the system. In 1985 Fauci had convinced Congress to allot more money for AIDS research so that NIAID could begin clinical drug trials. By 1987 the federal government’s multi-million dollar research effort had still not produced one treatment for AIDS. AIDS activists were particularly incensed when Fauci refused to advise doctors about aerosol pentamidine, a treatment that prolonged the lives of AIDS patients suffering from PCP (pneumocystis carinii pneumonia). Small private companies distributed information about aerosol pentamidine, while Fauci stood back and did nothing. In 1988 the director of NIAID told Congress that he wouldn’t follow his own government’s guidelines if he had AIDS.
